SAP Fortifies Cloud Strategy For India

As part of its global cloud strategy, SAP India, a subsidiary of SAP AG, has announced a roadmap to strengthen its cloud business in India. The new cloud strategy came into place after the acquisition of SuccessFactors a pioneer in the cloud and a clear leader in the human capital management (HCM) space and extends SAP’s services beyond small- and mid-sized enterprises to also include large enterprises. The cloud solutions will focus on four most important assets a company has to manage - people, money, customers and suppliers. The cloud solutions will also be integrated with innovations around mobility, analytics and collaborative services.

“We see a huge potential for the cloud computing technology. And we are committed to create a whole new cloud experience that would enable Indian businesses run better,” said Neeraj Athalye, Head Cloud Business, SAP India. “Our solutions are cost-effective, easy to deploy, and manage – and deliver rapid time-to-value. The major differentiator for SAP is that we offer unparalleled ability to our customers to integrate and take advantage of all their compute resources into cloud to suit their business needs.” he added.

SAP is an undisputed market leader globally in the cloud space with over 17 million users and 5,000 customers in more than 168 countries and in 35 languages. SAP India also enjoys a sizable cloud market share and is witnessing greater traction across various verticals.

Customers across different verticals have embraced SAP’s cloud solution to benefit hugely from its innovative approach that offers consumer-like user experience, real-time data analysis, secure IT environments, flexible infrastructure (PaaS, SaaS or hybrid environment) and lesser capital expenditure.

While the integrated suite of SAP Business ByDesign and Business One OnDemand solutions will continue to address the small and medium enterprises, the large enterprises will be served by a portfolio of line-of-business solutions as part of the new strategy.

SAP also aims to take the cloud market beyond software-as-a-service (SaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS), targeting new areas such as collaboration (including both people-centric applications and business network solutions, information and mobile services), information services (including business intelligence in the cloud and data services) and mobile services (especially mobile device management in the cloud).

SAP cloud computing in India

German business software maker SAP, which on Wednesday announced the acquisition of web-based software maker Ariba for $ 4.5 bn, is eyeing smartphone-based software and cloud computing in Indian and Asian markets to drive growth. “Our mobile software shares SAP infrastructure on smart
phones across different platforms like iOS, Android and RIM, giving customers absolute freedom on which platform to use,” Stephen Watts, president, SAP, Asia-Pacific Japan, told HT. “The share of mobility has gone from nil to around 8-10% in our revenues in Asia in just five quarters, and there is a massive opportunity here on.”

The company is also expecting returns from cloud computing, which involves renting of software hosted on remote servers, to touch €1 billion by 2015. A significant chunk of that would come from Asia, in particular China and India. “We expect that 20% of our revenue would come from cloud infrastructure by 2015,” said Watts. At present, 60-70% of the company’s global annual revenues of around € 14.2 bn (2011) comes from software.

SAP has locked horns with database maker Oracle, globally and even in India. Both SAP and Oracle have been buying out smaller companies in cloud computing. In April this year Oracle bought Taleo Corp, another cloud-based software company for $1.9 billion.

The company has 5,555 people on its payroll in India involved in software development.

Key Characterstics:
1. On- demand self service
2. Ubiquitous network access
3. Location independent resource pooling
4. Rapid elasticity
5. Pay per use

Delivery Models:

1. Software as a service(SaaS)
2. Platform as a service(PaaS)
3. Infrastructure as a service(IaaS)
